EARNINGS

Warner Bros. Discovery posts increased net loss in Q1

The first quarter earnings season has come to an end, with Sanoma and Warner Bros. Discovery posting their earnings report last Thursday. Here are some highlights from the reports:

Sanoma

  • – Net sales for Sanoma were stable YOY and amounted to EUR 221.1 million. In the Learning segment, net sales grew, driven by the Netherlands, Spain and Poland. Net sales declined in Media Finland due to lower advertising sales.
  • – Adjusted operating profit improved to EUR -16.1 million in Q1 2026, compared to -18.8 million in Q1 2025. In Learning, earnings were supported by higher net sales and improved cost efficiencies following Program Solar. Earnings increased in Media Finland as a result of higher subscription sales and robust cost containment.
  • – In 2026, Sanoma expects that the Group’s net sales to be EUR 1.29‒1.34 billion, which was 1.3 million in 2025. The Group’s adjusted operating profit is estimated to be EUR 205−225 million, compared to 188 million in 2025.
  • – Shares of Sanoma fell slightly after the report, as it was in line with analysts’ estimates.

Warner Bros. Discovery

  • – Total revenues were USD 8.9 billion for WBD in Q1 2026, a 3% ex-FX decrease from the prior year quarter.
  • – The company reported a net loss of USD 2.9 billion, compared to a net loss of USD 453 million in Q1 2025. The loss was tied to acquisition and restructuring expenses and included the USD 2.8 billion termination fee that Paramount Skydance paid to Netflix this year.
  • – Total streaming revenue was up 9% to about USD 2.89 billion as subscriber revenue increased due to the expansion of HBO Max in international markets. Advertising revenue for the unit was up 20% due to an increase in customers subscribing to the ad-supported tier.
  • – Shares of WBD dropped slightly following the report, as earnings per share were below analysts’ expectations.

PODCASTS

Podme expands into video podcasts

The Schibsted-owned podcast subscription service Podme has made several significant acquisitions this spring, with some of Sweden’s most popular podcasts joining the platform. Now, the company is preparing to roll out video versions of its podcasts directly within its own app.

“It is only a matter of time before the global video trend in podcasts reaches Sweden in earnest, and we are preparing for it,” Nicolas Leon, Sweden Manager at Podme, told Dagens Media.

Podme has also invested in a new studio in Sweden with full video capabilities, designed to resemble a living room rather than a traditional radio studio. The launch of video podcasts on Podme will take place in two stages.

“Step one is to adopt the same short-form format in the app that we currently use for marketing on social channels. Step two is to offer full-length versions of podcasts,” says Nicolas Leon.

A pilot project is currently underway in Finland and, as soon as it receives the green light, the feature will be rolled out in Sweden and Norway, with a launch hoped for later this year.

Initially, the video content will be exclusive to Podme’s own platform, but Leon does not rule out testing other distribution formats in the future. He emphasizes that the video format is intended to complement traditional podcasts.

“I still believe that there will be a strong demand for audio only. Video will not take over, but it will be a complement. But regardless of how it happens, we will be ready for the new consumption patterns”.
