Finnish Liiga may be replaced

In Finland, ice hockey is the most popular sport to watch on TV and online. Among all seasonal sports leagues, the top domestic hockey league, Liiga, attracts the highest viewing interest.

Now, a major shake-up is underway in Finnish elite hockey. According to Ilta-Sanomat, a new top-tier ice hockey league is being planned, which could replace Liiga. The project is being led by Causabon Oy, a company owned by former Tappara chairman Heikki Penttilä, who has already invited several clubs to negotiations.

“Finnish ice hockey has lagged behind the top European leagues in many ways. We need to raise the bar, and it needs to be done quickly”, Penttilä says in his statement.

According to the current plan, the league would initially have 10–12 teams. The league would be open, with promotion and relegation would be possible without the obligation to buy out a stake in the operating company.

According to Iltalehti, the new series is being created due to a dissatisfaction with Liiga’s unfortunate decision-making, revenue distribution in playoff games, the number of teams, and several other issues.

Liiga clubs Tappara, HIFK, TPS, Kiekko-Esbo, Kärpät, JYP, Ässät are reportedly prepared to join the new league. Even Jokerit, who now plays in the second league Mestis, is said to be interested in the new league.

How Liiga will handle this, and what the current Finnish top league will look like in the future, is unclear. MTV currently holds the rights to Liiga in Finland, with the contract expiring in 2027.

TikTok deal to be finalized tomorrow, according to the White house

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that the TikTok deal announced last month is set to be finalized on Thursday, when President Trump meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“We reached a final deal on TikTok. We reached one in Madrid, and I believe that as of today, all the details are ironed out. It will be for the two leaders to consummate that transaction on Thursday in Korea,” Bessent said.

President Trump signed an executive order last month paving the way for a deal to keep TikTok operating in the U.S. under a new corporate structure with American investors. The details, however, were not immediately clear. When asked Sunday about the specifics of the TikTok transaction, Bessent said he is “not part of the commercial side of the transaction.”

“My remit was to get the Chinese to agree to approve the transaction, and I believe we successfully accomplished that over the past two days,” Bessent added.

The White House outlined last month that the deal would establish a US-based joint venture made up of a majority of US investors and board members. ByteDance and its affiliates are expected to own less than 20% of the new entity. The White House said a consortium of American investors, including Oracle, will hold a stake in the new TikTok.
